MG 5 Review - What Car?

An electric car with a decent range must be pricey, right? Wrong. Let us introduce you to the MG 5 – an electric family estate that combines a decent battery range with an attractive list price.

How decent is the range, you ask? It depends whether you go for the 52.5kWh standard range or larger 61.1kWh long range battery pack version, but MG claims up to 214 miles from the former and 250 miles is possible from the latter. That's not bad considering most rivals that can match it cost well north of £30,000.

Don’t believe us? Well, it costs from less than the Honda E, the Mini Electric, the Nissan Leaf 40kWh, the Renault Zoe and even an entry-level Mazda MX-30 (one of the least expensive EVs on the market). A similarly priced long range 5 has a longer range and is bigger inside than all of them.

Indeed, it could be a perfectly viable first step into electric car ownership for those used to a Ford Focus EstateKia Ceed Sportswagen or VW Golf Estate.

The 5 will certainly save you a packet on company car tax compared with petrol, diesel and even plug-in hybrid alternatives because you’ll be free of pricey petrol-station fill-ups. The 5 should also satisfy the environmentally conscious looking for greener transport.

So, is the MG 5 too good to be true, or could it slot perfectly into your life at a pocket-friendly price? Over the next few pages, this review will let you know how it behaves on the road, investigate the interior and let you know how costly it is.
